Your First Visit:

Getting Started

Your first visit to our office is on us! We are excited to meet with you and answer any questions you may have during your first visit. This 30 minute screening will provide valuable insight into your or your child’s orthodontic needs. The initial appointment will consist of a thorough examination of the jaw, teeth, and facial characteristics/growth to assess whether orthodontic treatment would be beneficial. The orthodontist will also determine if it is the proper time to start orthodontic treatment. If additional growth or dental work is required prior to beginning orthodontics, you will receive a reminder postcard from our office when it is time to call for a re-evaluation consult. This second consultation is also provided free of charge.

If the patient is ready to begin orthodontic treatment right away, we can schedule your next visit during which diagnostic records will be taken. These records include photos, x-rays, and impressions of the teeth from which a study model (a 3-D model of the teeth) will be made. The records are necessary for diagnosis and treatment planning so that we can achieve optimal results for each patient and are also useful for communicating our findings to your dentist.  After orthodontic records have been analyzed, we will schedule a final consultation with you.  At the final consultation, an explanation of recommended treatment options, the estimated treatment length, and the cost of treatment will be provided.

If treatment is indicated, a bonding appointment will be needed. With the adhesives developed over the last 25 years the orthodontic brackets can be "bonded" directly to the teeth. This procedure does not involve needles or anesthetic, and as a result there is seldom any discomfort involved. To view a bonding procedure, watch our bonding video.

In addition to advances in adhesives, the metallurgy of the wires has also improved. The initial wires used in the first stages of your orthodontic treatment are much more flexible than in the past. Because the wires are more flexible, less force is required, and less force means less discomfort.  Some wires actually respond to small changes in temperature and are therefore referred to as heat-activated.

If you are interested in Invisalign, your appointment sequence will vary. Appointment sequences also vary if additional appliances such as "expanders" (Haas or Hyrax), Herbst, T-Rex, Pendulums, or Distal Jets are required.
